‘Street Fighter IV: Champion Edition’ Likely to Launch as a $4.99 Premium Title, as Gamevice Bundle Goes up for Preorder

‘Street Fighter IV: Champion Edition’ Likely to Launch as a .99 Premium Title, as Gamevice Bundle Goes up for Preorder

The excitement surrounding the upcoming release of Street Fighter IV: Champion Edition has hit fever pitch as of late, with an endless barrage of teaser trailers revealing new fighters, MFi support and a whole host of features that are set to make Capcom’s mobile brawler a serious challenger amongst the App Store fighting game community. Only last week did Gamevice release a new video that showcased Street Fighter IV: Champion Edition being played with one of their eponymous devices, and today the accessory company have revealed that an exclusive Street Fighter Bundled Edition is available to pre-order on their website, with a release date of July 2017. As we discovered last week, the Capcom Mobile Facebook page has previously suggested that the latest mobile iteration of Street Fighter will launch in ‘early July’, so the shipping date of the Gamevice controller should tie in nicely with the game’s App Store launch. However, the fact that the bundle comes with a $ 5 Apple Gift Card strongly suggests that Street Fighter IV: Champion Edition will launch for $ 4.99 as a fully premium title.

While the news that Street Fighter IV: Champion Edition is a premium release may not be too big a surprise for the majority of fighting game fans on the App Store, as Capcom have suggested over the past few weeks that the six DLC characters will be released in the form of free updates. Furthermore, both the original Street Fighter IV [$ 4.99] and the Street Fighter IV Volt [$ 4.99] sequel were premium titles, so it makes sense that the Champion Edition would follow this trend. That being said, the App Store is an entirely different beast compared to its 2011 self, and with Injustice 2 [Free] and its fighting peers adopting a free-to-play approach it wouldn’t be the biggest stretch to expect Capcom to follow suit. The evidence pointing towards a premium release is encouraging, even if it is not definitive – until the game does launch in July, we won’t know for certain exactly what sort of Street Fighter we’ll be getting, even if these early signs are promising. Until then, feel free to pre-order the Gamevice Street Fighter Bundled Edition on their website, and hadouken down to our forum thread for more discussion on the upcoming Champion Edition.

TouchArcade Game of the Week: ‘Cash Cow: Anniversary Edition’

TouchArcade Game of the Week: ‘Cash Cow: Anniversary Edition’

The idea behind the TouchArcade Game of the Week is that every Friday afternoon we post the one game that came out this week that we think is worth giving a special nod to. Now, before anyone goes over-thinking this, it doesn’t necessarily mean our Game of the Week pick is the highest scoring game in a review, the game with the best graphics, or really any other quantifiable “best” thing. Instead, it’s more just us picking out the single game out of the week’s releases that we think is the most noteworthy, surprising, interesting, or really any other hard to describe quality that makes it worth having if you were just going to pick up one.

These picks might be controversial, and that’s OK. If you disagree with what we’ve chosen, let’s try to use the comments of these articles to have conversations about what game is your game of the week and why.

Without further ado?

Cash Cow: Anniversary Edition

Alright, I understand this might seem like a weird choice for Game of the Week, as there was some pretty cool stuff released in the past 7 days, but hear me out. We know Riverman Media mostly for their excellent mobile titles, like Pizza vs. Skeletons [$ 2.99 / Free], The Executive [$ 2.99 / Free], and MUL.MASH.TAB.BA.GAL.GAL [$ 2.99], but way back in the day about 10 years ago they released their very first game on PC. It was a matching game of sorts called Cash Cow, where you’d combine smaller coins into bigger coins with the goal of eventually matching enough coins to create a dollar, which would then clear those coins from the board. Mixed in between the matching levels are small bonus games and a mini take on a farming sim where you get to purchase and decorate your own farm with 25 different types of items.

While it started off on desktop, Cash Cow did make its way to mobile WAY back in October of 2009 and published by Chillingo. A lite version and later a “Deluxe” version followed, but all versions of the game have been pulled from the App Store in the years since. Well, Riverman Media was able to secure the rights to Cash Cow back from Chillingo, and with the game’s 10 year anniversary approaching they decided to spruce it up and re-release it for mobile as Cash Cow: Anniversary Edition [$ 2.99], which they’ve done this week.

Ok. Here’s the deal. Cash Cow, even in its spruced up state, is not much of a looker. It looks like a developer’s first game. And matching games? Sheesh, that might as well be a death sentence on mobile nowadays. I was more than happy for Riverman to be celebrating their very first game and their many years of being an independent developer, but I can’t lie that these were the thoughts that ran through my head when I first saw Cash Cow: Anniversary Edition. And then I actually tried it and? well, I freaking love this game, ya’ll.

I don’t know what it is, but the whole matching coins to make a dollar thing is extremely fun. There’s tons of strategy in how you make your matches, and how the board will fall once you’ve cleared some coins off of it. And there are a lot of neat power-ups to keep things fresh as you play. I am probably more over matching games than anybody, but for some reason the mechanics in Cash Cow are super engaging. The real kicker is that I absolutely adore the silly farm-decorating stuff, too. There’s just something so fun about deciding what color to paint your barn and placing items where you want them. It’s soooooo basic, but somehow really enjoyable.

It’s really tough for me to explain what the special sauce is in Cash Cow: Anniversary Edition that makes it so fun, but just trust me when I say that if you think you can’t stomach yet another matching game or you’re put off by the pretty? not? great? graphics, then push those thoughts aside and actually try the game for yourself, you may end up just as pleasantly surprised as I was. It’s probably a tough sell for most mobile gamers as the game is a WHOPPING three dollars, but there’s 5 different modes, tons of levels to play through, and no IAP shenanigans of any kind. So if you’re cool with tossing a few bucks towards an interesting game and aren’t scared off by aesthetics, consider giving Cash Cow: Anniversary Edition a look and drop by the forum thread to leave your thoughts on it.

Check Out New Footage of ‘Street Fighter IV: Champion Edition’ Being Played with a Gamevice Controller, Game Launching Early July

Capcom launched the original Street Fighter IV [$ 4.99] for mobile way back in the March of 2010, and despite being a scaled down version of the full console game it played surprisingly well with its smattering of virtual buttons. A little more than a year later saw the release of Street Fighter IV Volt [$ 4.99], a new version of the game with the massive new feature of online multiplayer as well as a smattering of additional improvements. Street Fighter IV Volt was pretty darn popular with a really active online community, but for some reason all that success didn’t translate into much post-launch support or any more new games, and the Street Fighter IV series on mobile remained dormant for the next several years. Until just under a month ago when Capcom Mobile announced Street Fighter IV: Champion Edition, a revamped version of Volt with long-awaited new features like new characters, widescreen support, higher resolution visuals, and MFi controller support. Then just last week a new trailer was released showcasing the many new characters that are set to arrive in Champion Edition. In regards to MFi support, that new feature is the focus of a new video from Gamevice showcasing Street Fighter IV: Champion Edition being played with a Gamevice controller for the iPhone.

Subscribe to the TouchArcade YouTube channel

It seems based on that trailer that folks who are able to use a physical controller with Street Fighter IV: Champion Edition are going to have a huge advantage over those who don’t. Or, at least, that’s what Gamevice would like you to think so maybe you’ll buy one of their controllers! I’m only kind of kidding there, but the fact is that Street Fighter was designed with physical controls in mind so of course using physical controllers will be ideal, but we’ve found through previous mobile releases that players can get along pretty dang well with virtual controls. Either way, the Street Fighter mobile games have always been really fun little games to keep on my iPhone whenever the mood to do some mobile brawling strikes, and I’m really looking forward to Street Fighter IV: Champion Edition even if it is just a slightly improved version of a nearly 7 year old game. According to the Capcom Mobile Facebook page, Street Fighter IV: Champion Edition is set to launch in early July, and until then you can find discussion on the game from all the Street Fighter regulars in our forums.

Riverman Media’s ‘MUL.MASH.TAB.BA.GAL.GAL’ Is Getting an Expansion and ‘Cash Cow: Anniversary Edition’ to Be Relaunched Today

Riverman Media’s ‘MUL.MASH.TAB.BA.GAL.GAL’ Is Getting an Expansion and ‘Cash Cow: Anniversary Edition’ to Be Relaunched Today

We got some hot news tips from the boys over at Riverman Media on one new and one old game of theirs. First off, MUL.MASH.TAB.BA.GAL.GAL [$ 2.99] will soon be getting an expansion update. (They’re calling it “Expansion #1,” indicating potential additional expansions in the future?) If this is the first you’ve heard of MUL.MASH, check out Jared’s Game of the Week post on it for more details. It’s basically a modern, single-player version of Pong which explores what’s possible inside of that basic concept to its fullest.

This update adds a new “side quest” which features new enemies, backgrounds, music, and its own leaderboard. It doesn’t matter if you’ve beaten the original game or not, everyone can enjoy this new content from the title screen. New paddles are also included along with some quality of life improvements like tweaks to how the game handles iOS multitasking and the ability to restart from the pause menu.

Meanwhile, deep inside the dusty archives of the TouchArcade Forums you’ll find a thread for Riverman’s first game, Cash Cow. Released all the way back in 2009, Cash Cow is a matching game that has you matching based on logical increments of pocket change. This post from nearly a decade ago sums it up pretty well. The whole an interesting sample of what iOS gaming was like back then, with a huge discussion on a matching game which now days likely would be totally ignored. My favorite posts from the thread are those asking for the inclusion of OpenFeint. Here’s what it looked like back in the day:

Anyway, Riverman Media wrestled it away from Chillingoand is on the verge of re-releasing a “fully remastered” version of the game which works on all modern devices. According to Riverman, “It is widescreen, universal, retina, has all new backgrounds, includes game center leaderboards for its hi-score modes, and runs at a silky smooth 60fps.” I’m super curious to see how it does, if nothing else, it’s ultra-rad seeing developers continue to support games like this, which is an effort we should all support as iOS gamers.

‘Minecraft: Pocket Edition’ Servers Will Greatly Expand How You Play the Game

‘Minecraft: Pocket Edition’ Servers Will Greatly Expand How You Play the Game

You probably know by now that Microsoft has announced that Minecraft: Pocket Edition [$ 6.99] will become just Minecraft and will have cross-play with all other platforms using the bedrock engine. The other new feature that’s been announced is servers coming to mobile, which will greatly expand how you can play the game. In a video and blog post published today, Microsoft offered a few more details on how the servers will work. First a necessary clarification: Realms and Servers are a different thing. Realms are private, cloud-hosted worlds hosted by Microsoft that you have to pay to run. Servers, on the other hand, are community-owned and are open to everyone who wants to join.

Subscribe to the TouchArcade YouTube channel

The servers will be offering activities like co-op exploration, PvP game modes, competitive builds, and more. I do share the concerns of many that going into a PvP fight against someone with a mouse and keyboard will be most probably a death sentence, but, as you’ll hear in the video, the server owners are trying to find modes and ways to play that will level the playing field. Are you interested in joining these servers once they become available later this summer?

‘Street Fighter IV: Champion Edition’ Trailer Released, Six Free DLC Characters Announced

‘Street Fighter IV: Champion Edition’ Trailer Released, Six Free DLC Characters Announced

Last month, Capcom unexpectedly announced that they would be releasing a brand new mobile iteration in the Street Fighter series, dubbed Street Fighter IV: Champion Edition. Owing to the quality of the last few games in the series that have made the transition to the smaller screen, and an abundance of awesome new features and characters, it was enough to get the iOS fighting game community on our forums excitedly anticipating what this sequel may have in store for us. While there is still no specified release date, Capcom have today released a brand new trailer for Street Fighter IV: Champion Edition, which gives a glimpse of the action, and also divulges some details on the characters we can expect to brawl as when the title finally reaches the App Store.

Subscribe to the TouchArcade YouTube channel

The new trailer for Street Fighter IV: Champion Edition provides the first gameplay of some of the new characters in the game, with Dudley and his unfortunate cowlick and the whip-wielding Poison featuring in the footage. Otherwise, it seems to be business as usual – the graphical style appears to be similar to Street Fighter IV Volt [$ 4.99], even if Capcom promise ‘higher resolution graphics’, and the virtual controls remain untouched. However, Capcom have also detailed on their website that six more characters are scheduled to be added to the title’s roster in later free updates, and so a grand total of nine new fighters is certainly welcome, as is the MFi controller compatibility. Street Fighter IV: Champion Edition is the epitome of ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’, and I can’t wait to step into the fray when it launches in the near future. If you’re similarly excited, let us know your impressions of this new trailer on our forum thread.

‘Street Fighter IV: Champion Edition’ Heading to iOS this Summer

‘Street Fighter IV: Champion Edition’ Heading to iOS this Summer

Many moons ago (March of 2010 to be exact) Capcom released a mobile version of their then still sort of new-ish console and PC fighter Street Fighter IV, which resurrected the mostly dormant franchise for the first proper new entry in the series since 1997’s Street Fighter III. It also brought the game’s visuals into 3D while retaining the classic 2D fighting mechanics, and for the mobile iteration of Street Fighter IV [$ 4.99] they used the same models as the full game but pre-rendered them and animated them like sprites. It was sort of a strange technique but still looked quite cool, and Street Fighter IV on mobile was a huge success, even at its original price of $ 9.99.

With Capcom being Capcom you’d think that after that success we’d be in for a new Street Fighter mobile game each and every year, and for a while that was true. 2011 brought Street Fighter IV Volt [$ 4.99], which was every bit as good as the original but included the fantastic feature of online multiplayer. Then 2012 brought us a mobile version of Street Fighter X Tekken which had just debuted on consoles and PC. Yes, my mind was filled with dreams of Street Fighter spinoffs and slightly iterated upon sequels for the foreseeable future.

Except? Capcom just sort of stopped. Their three released Street Fighter mobile titles all received pretty good support for a while, with new characters and features frequently added in updates. But aside from some mostly boring compatibility updates these games have been left out to dry for a long time, and Street Fighter X Tekken has disappeared from the App Store completely. It makes you wonder what Capcom was thinking as they obviously had a hit with a neat little mobile Street Fighter people could play on the device that was always with them, and even now our Street Fighter IV Volt thread remains fairly active and is the second most viewed thread in our entire forums with more than 3.2 million views. People are hungry for more mobile Street Fighter!

Well it seems that all these years later and Capcom is finally ready to deliver that with their just announced Street Fighter IV: Champion Edition. In true Street Fighter tradition, this is largely an iterative improvement on Street Fighter IV, but one that is more than welcome as far as I’m concerned. The previous Street Fighters predated the era of widescreen and Plus sized iPhones, and Champion Edition will rectify that with higher resolution visuals, true widescreen support, and “a host of updates and refinements.” It will also include three new characters: Poison, Ibuki and Dudly!

Other than that, it sounds like Champion Edition will follow the same formula as its mobile predecessors in terms of controls and features. One truly welcomed feature will be MFi controller support, and just like Volt this release will also feature online play over WiFi. Coupled with 25 playable characters on release and Street Fighter IV: Champion Edition sounds like the mobile Street Fighter that I’ve been dreaming about for the past 5+ years. Better late than never, I guess! The game is set to release at a nebulous point sometime this summer, but if you want to stay in the loop you can head here to pre-register and join in on some discussion in our forums.

‘Adventure Time’ Is Coming to ‘Minecraft: Pocket Edition’ in a Mathematical Mash-Up Pack

‘Adventure Time’ Is Coming to ‘Minecraft: Pocket Edition’ in a Mathematical Mash-Up Pack

Minecraft mash-up packs have been some of the neatest new additions to the game on all platforms, and seeing some big franchises collaborate with the iconic crafting title has gone some way to keeping the gameplay fresh amidst numerous other activities competing for your time. The Super Mario series came out in force in the recently released Nintendo Switch edition of Minecraft, and on Minecraft: Pocket Edition [$ 6.99] we’ve had Magic: The Gathering and even the Fallout series make their respective debuts in Mojang’s blocky world builder. Today, the developers have announced that the cult classic cartoon Adventure Time will soon receive a mash-up pack in the console and mobile versions of the game, as you explore the Land of Ooo with the colorful and quirky characters from the series.

This is by no means the first time that Adventure Time has appeared on iOS, with the particularly novel Card Wars [$ 0.99] making its debut back in 2014, and a whole host of similar spin-off titles also having dropped on the App Store since. However, it also isn’t the first time that the series has been in Minecraft – at least in an official capacity. A quick search on YouTube reveals many custom mods of the game with millions of views, and it’s likely that the success of many of these played a part in this upcoming Adventure Time x Minecraft mash-up pack. Still, it’s great to see the series officially come to Minecraft: Pocket Edition, and should be a neat addition when it launches in the near future. For now, c’mon grab your friends and prepare to to go to very distant lands by watching the awesome theme song trailer on Minecraft’s Twitter account above, and head down to our forum thread for further details and discussion on this newest mash-up pack in Minecraft: Pocket Edition.

Greek Mythology Comes to ‘Minecraft: Pocket Edition’ In Latest Mash-Up Pack

Greek Mythology Comes to ‘Minecraft: Pocket Edition’ In Latest Mash-Up Pack

Minecraft: Pocket Edition [$ 6.99] continues to get fun and colorful mash-up packs, and this time around we got a Greek Mythology invasion, which is very appropriate for the world of Minecraft. This pack brings close to 40 new skins that include Zeus, Apollo, Prometheus, Medusa, the Minotaur, and plenty of half-dressed muscular men. In addition to the skins, this pack adds a new UI to the game, a custom texture set that you can see in the screenshot below, and an original score by Gareth Coker. This pack has been on consoles for some time now, so I’m glad to see it come to mobile.

Given that the Ancient Greeks were really into columns and relatively squarish buildings, this texture pack should work great in Minecraft and should make your builds quite cool. This might be my Greek heritage speaking, of course. The new mash-up is available now, so go check it out.
